The Seventh Annual Hilton Head Concours d'Elegance was jammed packed with special cars this
year with the Honored Marque being Brass Era Cars (pre-1916). On the showfield, Maserati was
represented with a 1960 3500GT coupe owned by Timothy Hassenger and my 1968 Mistral
spyder. I must say the 3500GT coupe was extremely nice. Also extremely nice was the Mercedes
300SL gullwing, fresh from a nuts and bolts restoration, that was parked right next to me … that car
was the class winner.
Several Maseratis were sold at the Worldwide Auctioneers auction that was held the day before the
Concours. A 1963 3500 GT Spyder traded hands for $211,200 while a 1963 Sebring Coupe sold
for $85,800. It was alleged that these two cars had been stable mates for the past 25 years. The
reality is I use to own that Vignale spyder about 10 years ago, which is a reminder not to believe
everything that is printed in an auction booklet.
This was my first year attending this invitation only event. Although not quite up to the quality level
of Amelia Island, Hilton Head is quickly becoming a very respectable Concours and early November
is a great time of the year to be in this part of the country.
